Easter week as a family holiday has taken some serious blows as civil rights
push out Christian traditions. Now that the week is called Spring Break
instead of Easter Vacation, teachers and school administrators feel no
obligation to a specific date. The week off now varies willy nilly from
one school to another, so it is no longer possible to use the week for family
gatherings. Another bit of Americana has fallen by the wayside of
diversity.
All that is to say that our Easter gathering this year was a small one, just
Craig, Jodie and Tyler from Nevada City driving down 17 miles to spend the day
with Grandma and Grandpa at Lake Wildwood. I say "just" in the
sense that there were just a few of us, not that it wasn't a great day with the
children. Soon after Craig and family arrived at about 2:30 p.m. we were
out in the back yard hunting eggs that Mary and Jodie had hidden.
Tyler then broke open his eggs to spill his loot into another bucket. Soon he
and Craig took the speed boat for a ride and some fishing. Meanwhile,
Grandpa, Grandma and Jodie visited on the deck overlooking the lake and Grandpa
went back to watch the end of the Masters Open golf tournament. Some time
later we all enjoyed Grandma Mary's ham, potatoes, buttered carrots, and spinach
salad, and cauliflower dripping with cheese that Jodie brought. This was topped
off with fresh coffee and cheese cake baked by Mary earlier in the day. In
the hour before sunset Craig and Tyler went back out in the boat and got a few
nibbles. One day they'll actually catch some fish.
